A German World War machine--don't ask me why there're German soldiers throwing a grenade at a machine with an Iron Cross on it. Maybe it's got a short fuse? Yeah, that's it...war machine gone rogue...

ANYWAY.

This is my first detailed drawing of a fictitious machine. Is this steam punk? Diesel punk? Stupidity? Haven't any idea.

Awesome! BTW, when it comes to deciding genres, I go with the techno/chronological method. Steampunk = 1800-1900, beginning with the invention of the steam engine and ending in 1918 with the end of world war 1 (and all those pesky imperial powers). ('Boilerpunk' is a subgenre of Steam and is basically a change of perspective - showing miserable trench-solders or coal-shoveling workers instead of dainty ladies and gentleman.) Dieselpunk = post WW1, beginning with the invention of high-powered diesel engines, swing music, and the outbreak of WW2. It essentially ends upon the invention of computers and the beginning of the futuristic era of Cyberpunk, which is not yet completed.

Personally, I like boilerpunk a lot - it has the cultural, historical, and artistic elements of steampunk, but is more realistic and shows how imperial society wasn't all tea-parties, gaslight romances, and masked balls and such - that the upperclass got to do these things because millions of common working people had to slave away and die after a miserable 30 years of life. However, I am also rapidly becoming more interested in dieselpunk - especially after learning they have Soviets!!! :D :D :D

Thank you, again, sir!

Boilerpunk! I've never heard of such a thing, but I do love the idea. I'm much more into Steampunk for the historical, mechanical, and socio-political aspect of the genre. "...that the upperclass got to do these things because millions of common working people had to slave away and die after a miserable 30 years of life." I completely and unequivocally agree!! I don't think most "Steampunkers" realize just how fucking hard life actually was back then for the vast majority of people.

And NOTHING pisses me off more than seeing a mechanic/worker costume or design that's spotless and clean. :iconnotimpressedplz: I can't keep a fucking white shirt clean in the 21st century, I seriously fucking doubt a mechanic in the 18th would be pristine.

Well I must say we are in absolute agreement as far as this matter goes! I'm all for using history as inspiration, but it becomes a problem when people only use the glossy, nostalgic, 'good-olde-days' version of history.

Not only is this a moronic thing to do - it's also annoyingly lame, because the most interesting parts of history are the parts that people always want to gloss over. Steampunk (and all the other alt-history genres) are really much more fun when viewed through a realistic lens... even if it isn't very pretty all the time. ~lish

First off: definitely Dieselpunk.
Second, this is a really spectacular piece , your linework especially!
Was this piece done on brown paper, or did you tint it digitally?
Either way, its a great choice, makes it look like a battlefield sketch.

Thank you very much! It's great to hear some confirmation--this poor drawing was about to have an identity crisis, I think. xD

It was a little bit of both. The paper I drew it on was fairly warm-colored, and the lighting in which I took the picture was also yellow. Then a little bit of digital touch-up...whaddabang, whaddaboom. Brown color.

Thank you again for the praise, and for acceptance into your group's gallery!

I do really like this, but I think instead of having the torso bit be all wibbly-wobbly, you should just have a few impact dents and such. But thats just something to do different, not saying it would make it better. Because this is quite amazing already : 3

Wow... just wow. That's brilliant.
I mean... it's creepy in its own way. And the background adds without distracting from the main focus... and the detail. It's brilliant!
